You must take your basic security guard training course from a registered training facility. The Ministry of Community Safety & Correctional Services licenses both private investigators and security guards in Ontario. The process to obtain a license is to first take the required training with our company. Once you complete the course, we will issue you a certificate of completion, and with that certificate of completion, you will schedule your exam with SERCO at a local Drive Test centre in Toronto, Brampton, Ottawa or a city closest to you. Once you write and pass the Ministry exam, you will be able to apply for the license with the Ministry, and once you are licensed, you can work with any Security Company in Ontario. The only requirements by the Ministry to become a security guard in Ontario is to be at least 18 years of age and have a clean criminal record.
The rate will vary depending on the company, the location, the job and level of responsibility, however, the starting wage is $14.00 per hour, and we have seen Security Professionals making up to $30.00 per hour. Especially in the larger cities of Ontario like Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, North York, Scarborough, Hamilton, Ottawa, and Barrie. However, the rates are competitive in other cities as well. The more skill, training and responsibility you show you can handle the more your pay will increase.
We are a National Private Investigative Agency, so we currently do not offer Security Services however we work with many Security Agencies and any students who express they want employment we will make arrangements for you to interview with a company near you that is hiring.
We are the Best! When we first started offering training, it was in the investigations sector of the industry as we needed more staff. Then we realized there was a shortage of quality trainers in Ontario. We then handpicked the best experts from the Security industry to help us develop the best court on the market. We wanted the course to be highly informative, user-friendly, and captivating and our curriculum is just that. We have dozens of positive reviews from our classes and students who completed the training and are licensed security guards working in the industry now. We have won the Consumers Choice Award two years in a row in Toronto and we also offer 25 Air Mile Reward Miles upon course completion. We love being the largest provider of Security Classes in Ontario and seeing so many join an industry they love and are excited about.
The Smith Investigation Agency’s Security Guard Training Course is offered online. The content is available 24/7, which means you can learn at your own pace using both audio and visual training material. We do have the option available to learn in class however we felt that the online course is better as you learn at your own pace and you do not have to miss school or work.
Yes, the Ministry requires any Security Professionals to be First Aid Certified. The good news is you can take your Emergency First Aid & CPR/AED course with us if you need it. You can bypass our First Aid course if you already have a valid certificate. If you purchase our combo course with Security Training and First Aid once you complete the training, we will schedule you for your First Aid in a city closest to you. The security guard training course is a minimum of 40 hours—if you are not currently certified in emergency first aid. If you have already earned your emergency first aid certificate, you are only required to complete 33.5 hours.
According to the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services in September 2018 there were only 77,204 licensed private security professionals and nearly 1000 companies to work with. If you consider how large Ontario is that is not a lot of security individuals for the number of available positions. This is very good for you as there are more jobs available in places like hospitals, malls, retail spaces, government buildings, airports, marinas, private property, production and medical facilities, factories, and more.
The Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services (MCSCS) manages the private security guard course outline in Ontario. If a company offers a security guard training course, they must provide content recommended by the MCSCS. That outlines the rules, laws and guidelines of the industry. MCSCS handles the distribution of your security guard license. It is also the organization that can revoke your license should you break the rules, laws or guidelines set out by the Ministry.
